Since 1 January 2019, when it took over the responsibilities from the Federal Ministry of Justice, the Federal Office of Justice has carried out central tasks in terms of the training of legal practitioners at a national level within Germany and at a European level.
This includes playing a role in organising the conferences of the German Judicial Academy (DRA) in Trier and Wustrau, as well as participation in planning and carrying out training events for the European Judicial Training Network (EJTN). Training offered by other providers of European judicial training, such as the Academy of European Law (ERA) and the European Patent Office (EPO), is also supported by the Federal Office of Justice. It is the Federal Ministry of Justice that remains in charge of political and strategic matters relating to judicial training.
The German Judicial Academy is responsible for offering training nationally within Germany. The Federal Office of Justice is one of the organisations which share responsibility for hosting events on the programme, a responsibility which takes the form of being involved in organising and supporting conferences arranged by the Federal Government.
At a European level, the EJTN – which has its headquarters in Brussels – is responsible for training events and for exchange programmes for judges and public prosecutors. The Federal Office of Justice and its supervising authority, the Federal Ministry of Justice, share between them the role of Germany’s contact point. The Federal Office of Justice participates in the “Programmes” working group, and takes on operational tasks in relation to the hosting of training events offered by the EJTN.
